Peace or Posturing? Trump to Meet Putin Amid Skepticism and Renewed Sanctions

As the war in Ukraine grinds on, President Donald Trump has announced a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska next week, raising questions about whether it’s a genuine push for peace or political posturing. The summit is scheduled for August 15, a date that also marks Trump’s deadline for Russia to find a peaceful resolution or face new U.S. sanctions.
Trump has publicly projected confidence, stating a deal is “very close” and suggesting it could involve a “swapping of territories.” This idea of cementing some of Russia’s territorial gains has caused alarm in Europe, with many fearing Ukraine’s interests could be sacrificed for a bilateral agreement between Washington and Moscow.
Adding to the pressure, Canada, the UK, and the EU have just lowered the price cap on Russian oil, aiming to cripple Moscow’s war funding. This coordinated economic move stands in parallel to Trump’s own threats, including recent tariffs on India for its purchase of Russian oil, creating a complex backdrop for the upcoming talks.
However, skepticism remains rampant. On the 1,000-kilometre front line, Ukrainian soldiers express doubt about negotiating with Russia, with one commander stating the only option is to “defeat them.” This sentiment is echoed by the Institute for the Study of War, which assesses that Putin is not interested in ending the war but in outlasting the West.
