Google Confirsm End of AI Feature That Brought Amateur Medical Tips to Search Results

by admin477351

Google has confirmed the removal of a search feature that displayed AI-organized health tips gathered from online communities. “What People Suggest” was designed to give users access to community health perspectives alongside expert medical content, but the feature has now been discontinued. Three insiders confirmed its removal before Google acknowledged it publicly with a limited statement.
The product was introduced by Google at “The Check Up,” its health-focused event in New York, where it was celebrated as a step forward in community-driven health information. Former chief health officer Karen DeSalvo wrote that the tool addressed a genuine user behavior — seeking out the experiences of others in similar health situations. AI organized these community voices into thematic summaries, with links to original sources.
Google’s spokesperson attributed the removal to search interface simplification and denied that safety or quality concerns factored into the decision. When the company was asked to provide evidence of a public announcement about the change, it referenced a blog post that contained no mention of the discontinued feature. This has been flagged by critics as a failure of transparency.
The episode adds to an already difficult period for Google’s health AI efforts. An earlier investigation found that AI Overviews in Google Search were sharing false health information with billions of users every month. While Google removed some medical AI Overviews following the investigation, health experts have pushed for more comprehensive reform.
Google’s next health event will give the company another platform to communicate its vision for AI and healthcare. But trust in that vision will require demonstrated accountability, not just inspirational product launches. The removal of “What People Suggest” — handled quietly and without genuine public notice — represents a failure on that front that Google would do well to address.
