British Steel’s Scunthorpe Plant Bags Huge Turkish Rail Contract in Boost to UK Industry

One of Britain’s most storied industrial sites has secured a major international contract that underscores its continued value to the UK economy. British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant has won an eight-figure deal to supply 36,000 tonnes of rail for Turkey’s new 599km high-speed railway, in a development that has been welcomed across the steel industry.
The contract with ERG International Group, backed by UK Export Finance, will see Scunthorpe-produced rail shipped to Turkey for use on the Ankara–İzmir line — one of the country’s flagship infrastructure projects. The railway is designed to dramatically reduce travel times between Turkey’s capital and its Aegean coast while also cutting carbon emissions, making it both an economic and environmental priority.
In Scunthorpe, the deal has already made its mark. Twenty-three new jobs have been created, and the plant has resumed 24-hour rail production for the first time in more than a decade. For the workforce of around 3,500 people — who have faced prolonged uncertainty about the site’s future — the contract represents a welcome injection of confidence and stability.
UK Steel’s director general praised the deal as proof of British Steel’s world-class capability in rail manufacturing. He called on the government to complement commercial wins with structural policy support, particularly on energy costs and import protections, noting that “contracts alone cannot address the structural pressures facing the sector.”
The financial challenge facing British Steel has not abated, however. Under government control since the emergency takeover, the plant is losing £1.2 million a day, with total losses now at £359 million. The Turkish contract is a genuine boost to UK industry — but more is needed before British Steel can claim to be on a genuinely sustainable path.
