Qatar has pledged continued support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and economic recovery, focusing on expanding cooperation in key sectors such as energy, electricity, and development projects. This commitment was announced by Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, during discussions with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. The talks aimed to strengthen bilateral relations and address ongoing regional tensions.
Key outcomes from the discussions include progress in energy collaboration, with QatarEnergy partnering with France’s TotalEnergies to develop a solar power plant in Lebanon. This initiative marks the beginning of broader energy cooperation efforts between the two nations. Additionally, plans are underway for a joint project to modernize Lebanon’s electricity infrastructure through a build-operate-transfer model, allowing the project to proceed without immediate financial input from the Lebanese government.
Sheikh Mohammed also reaffirmed Qatar’s support for Lebanese state institutions, including the Lebanese Armed Forces, emphasizing their role in maintaining national security and stability. Qatar expressed concerns over increasing hostilities in Lebanon, particularly condemning Israeli attacks on peacekeeping forces and the violation of Lebanese territory. Sheikh Mohammed called for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, advocating for an end to hostilities and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied areas in Lebanon.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam welcomed Qatar’s ongoing political, economic, and humanitarian assistance. He highlighted the potential impact of cooperation in energy and investment sectors on Lebanon’s economy and reconstruction efforts, which could also facilitate the return of displaced residents to their communities.
Qatar remains committed to working with international partners to bolster Lebanon’s security and stability, supporting its long-term recovery and economic revitalization. This commitment underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing Lebanon’s challenges and fostering regional stability.
