Qatar recently took part in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Committee of Ministers of Social Affairs and Social Development meeting in Bahrain, with the aim of enhancing regional cooperation in social welfare, family support, and community development. The event was attended by Qatar’s Minister of Social Development and Family, Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi.

The discussions centered around improving coordination among GCC member states, sharing expertise, and developing joint initiatives to tackle social challenges that affect the region. A key focus was placed on reviewing the implementation of existing Gulf-wide decisions and outlining the committee’s work plan for 2026–2030.

Among the prominent topics discussed were disability rights, specifically the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. There was also a proposal to establish a regular Gulf forum dedicated to disability-related issues. Additionally, the ministers examined the influence of artificial intelligence on children’s rights, considering both the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies. Plans for producing a regional report on children’s rights and their future in GCC countries were also discussed, along with further coordination efforts on childhood protection and welfare.

Other agenda items included strengthening cooperation on women’s issues and considering new initiatives to advance social development throughout the Gulf region. The meeting underscored the importance of adapting regional initiatives to meet changing community needs effectively.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Al Nuaimi attended a 2026 ceremony that recognized individuals and projects for their contributions to civil social work. Several Qatari figures and initiatives received recognition for their impactful contributions, highlighting Qatar’s active role in promoting social development across the GCC.
